The Rotaract Club of Georgetown (RCG) under its Community Service Arm on Saturday December 10, 2016 hosted a project titled Christmas Cheer at the Indian Monument Garden catering to 124 children drawn from their Sophia Literacy Programme (SLP) and 7 orphanages in and around Georgetown, Greater Georgetown, Linden and the East Coast of Demerara.
The project sought to share the spirit of joy, peace and goodwill of the Christmas Season in a grand Christmas party for children ages 2yrs 18 yrs of Cornelia Ida Childrens Home, Bless the Children Home, A Sanctuary Childrens Home, Joshua House, Saheed Boys Orphanage, Saheed Girls Orphange and Hararuni Girls Home and the Clubs aforementioned ongoing Sophia Literacy Programme. The Literacy Programme offers free tutoring by trained teachers to the children of the Sophia community to improve their literacy skills.
The children were treated to a fun filled afternoon of games, drama from the Guyana National Drama Company, gifts and a lot of other goodies including snacks and refreshments.
The clubs Christmas Cheer project was the first of its kind executed by the Rotaract Club of Georgetown and it was truly heartwarming to see the overwhelming support that the event received and how the children truly enjoyed themselves.
The project was sponsored by the Embassy of Chile, the Gafoors Foundation, G.B.T.I Water Street Branch, G.P.L, Benjamins Bakery, the Medicine Chest, Camex Restaurants Inc, Marcel Gaskin and Associates, Father Moey and Determine Sounds, Pradeep Samtani of City Center, Impressions, China Trading, Sterling Products Ltd, Bryden and Fernandes, the Board of Directors of the Indian Commemoration Trust and Rotaractors and Guests of the RCG.
The Rotaract Club of Georgetown is a not for profit, non-governmental organization for individuals between the ages of 18 to 30 years with a mandate to provide service to the community through volunteer initiatives. Rotaract is a Rotary Club Partner designed to foster leadership, responsible citizenship, high ethical standards in business; and ultimately a better life for youths and those around their influence circles. The Rotaract Club of Georgetown has been serving the community for over 30 years.
